Sophie sighed sadly. ‘And when people stop focusing on their dreams they become lost in the maze of their minds, wandering around in endlessly repeating circles. Then the colours of life start to dull, and excitement starts to die. Until you’re trapped in a prison of your own making, looking out at life instead of living it.’
How do you feel when you think about what you want? Do you jump up, eager to get going because you just can’t wait to make your dreams come true? Or do you sit on your hands and sigh because you don’t have any idea what to do next? Maybe you daydream because you’re too scared to take a chance and see. Perhaps you suppress your desires, because you don’t believe you’ll ever have what you want, and the sense of disappointment is too much to bear.
When we’re young we dream big. We think about everything and anything we could possibly want to do, have and be. These aspirations are usually larger-than-life, no sense of reason or logic gets in the way. We believe in our brilliance, we have confidence in our powers, we assume that others will support us, and we trust that everything will work out just as we want it to.
Some adults never lose their childhood combination of faith and courage. And, unsurprisingly, their dreams often do come true. If not, they just get new and better ones. But those of us who let disappointments crush our faith, fears create doubt, and succumb to sadness and defeat, we will give up. So, unsurprisingly, our dreams don’t come true. And, one day, we stop believing they ever could.
If you want something, but don’t think you’ll ever have it, you’ll suppress your desires because they only lead to frustration and pain. So, instead of getting out into the world and living your life, you’ll sit on the sofa and stare at the television, glaze over at your desk, and zone out with your friends. Eventually you’re numb, so scared of feeling disappointed that you’ll become petrified – frozen in time.
It takes an enormous amount of energy to suppress your desires. And the longer you push them down, the more pressure builds up, and the more effort is needed to keep the dam from bursting forth. It’s a weight on your chest, a rock on your shoulders, and all you feel anymore is a passive victim of life, unable to do anything about it.
But as long as you continue the cycle, accepting your life as it is and not imagining how it could be, you’ll never have any idea just what you’re capable of. The power that lies underneath your pain is huge, magnificent and glorious. If it wasn’t, if your strength and your dreams were insubstantial, then it wouldn’t take such a huge amount of energy to suppress them.
Now, it will take enormous courage to get back in touch with your desires, after you’ve spent so long holding them back. But you have it in you. You hold in your heart power that is greater than any of your fears, and all of life’s challenges. Lift the lid off your emotions and release them. Begin to feel again. This is your first step towards freedom.
Hiding underneath your pain is your power. And, until you feel all the emotions you’re scared to feel, you’ll never be aware of just how powerful you are. Because, when you suppress one thing, you suppress everything. So of course you thought yourself a victim of life, rather than a warrior on the way to conquer your demons and create your dreams. But now you are ready, to embrace the world and discover just how much you’re made of.
When the desire in your heart is pure, and your mind is silent and free from fear, you can sit in the seat of your strength once more. You can breathe deeply and start to take action again. You can begin to take bold steps towards your dreams. You need never feel small or insignificant in the face of what you want because you won’t want something that it’s not in your power to create. Each of us is a perfect fit with our special wishes; we all have unique talents and skills that complement our desires. So it’s very likely that what you want, you have within you to do.
You have strength inside you to do incredible things, to overcome seemingly insurmountable odds; you have innate magic to create and brilliance to triumph. We all do. Human beings can climb mountains, change laws, write symphonies and literature, save each other’s lives and touch each other’s hearts. The power of human potential is incredible. You have fire inside you to light a path to your desires and destiny, if you can realise your power and let your spirit shine through.
